New Regulations On Vietnam Visa Extension, Visa Application, And Temporary Residence Card. According to Vietnamese law, all foreign nationals regardless of nationality when applying for a visa, renewing a visa, applying for a temporary residence card in Vietnam will apply the new regulations of Vietnam’s Law on Entry and Exit (No. 47/2014 / QH2013 and Decree No. 07/2017 / ND-CP) on granting Vietnamese immigration visas for foreigners.

The new provisions of the Law on visa application, visa extension, and temporary residence card for foreigners are shown in some general provisions as well as in each detailed procedure for visa application.


1. Purpose of the visit cannot be converted.

2. Visas are issued separately for each person, except for children under 14 years of age who are granted a passport with their father or mother or guardian. 

3. Visas are placed in passports or issued separately depending on the specific circumstances of each country during the immigration process.

4. Vietnam visa has a one-time and multiple-entry visa. A one-time visa with only one entry and exit value, multiple-entry visas does not limit the number of entry and exit times during a valid visa period. 

5. The law specifying the visa and temporary residence card is the abbreviation for the purpose of the visa applicant.

• ĐT - Issued for foreign investors in Vietnam and foreign lawyers practicing in Vietnam.
• DN - Issued to businessmen who come to work in Vietnam.
• NN1 - Issued to heads of representative offices, projects of international organizations, foreign non-governmental organizations in Vietnam.
• NN2 - Issued to heads of representative offices, branches of foreign traders, representative offices of foreign economic, cultural and other specialized organizations in Vietnam.
• NN3 - Issued to people working with foreign non-governmental organizations, representative offices, branches of foreign traders, representative offices of economic, cultural and other specialized organizations in Vietnam.
• DH - Issued for interns and students.
• HN - Issued to people attending conferences and seminars.
• PV1 - Issued to resident journalists in Vietnam.
• PV2 - Issued to journalists who work for a short period in Vietnam.
• LĐ - Issued to people with a work permit
• DL - Issued to tourists
• TT - is granted to individuals who are entering Vietnam in order to visit with their spouses, children who are Vietnamese or foreigners residing in Vietnam and holding Vietnam visa types with the symbols: LV1, LV2, ĐT, NN1, NN2, DH, PV1, LĐ (This Vietnam visa type is for a maximum of 2 months).
• VR - is granted to individuals who are entering Vietnam in order to visit with relatives residing there. (This Vietnam visa type is for a maximum 6 months).
• SQ - is issued to Vietnam diplomatic missions abroad for individuals who have a working relationship with the competent authorities Vietnam visa abroad and spouses, children or who have written request of the competent authority in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the host country (This Vietnam visa type is for a maximum 30 days).

6. Holders of normal passports issued by 24 countries do not require visas for Vietnam:
 

* - A gap of at least 30 days between two visa-free visits is required. Must have a printout of an onward ticket.
1 - for British citizens only. 
7. Vietnam issued an electronic visa (E-Visa) for citizens of 80 countries with a 1-month visa period for Vietnam entry and exit.
8. Vietnam currently applies a bilateral visa exemption system for a period of 30 days for tourists from ASEAN countries (except Brunei for a period of 14 days). The Asian countries also apply similar visa exemptions for Vietnamese citizens when entering these countries. The requirements for visa exemption are at least 06 months passport validity and a return ticket.
9. A temporary residence card issued to foreign investors in Vietnam and foreign lawyers practicing in Vietnam for a maximum period of 5 years.
10. A temporary residence card issued to a relative of a foreigner shall not exceed 5 years.
