Applying for an emergency travel document in Vietnam? Your passport is an important document and under Vietnamese law foreigners can be required to produce their passport to local authorities at any time. It is a good idea to keep your other forms of identification separate from your passport. This minimises the risk of losing all your identification at once.
If your passport is lost or stolen, you must follow the following steps:
Obtain a police report;
Apply for a new travel document from the Embassy or Consulate-General;
Obtain an exit or replacement visa in order to leave Vietnam.
In Vietnam, if you have lost or had your passport stolen, you will need to obtain a new passport which has an exit or replacement visa. In order to obtain an exit or replacement visa, you must first apply for a police report report from the local police office closest to where the passport was lost or stolen. You cannot apply for a police report in a different location to where you have lost or had your passport stolen. Vietnamese immigration authorities will only accept a Vietnamese police report in order to process an exit or replacement visa. It is recommended that you seek assistance to obtain a police report through your hotel, travel agent/group or other local in-country contacts. It is also recommended that you apply for your police report before applying for another travel document. You should also endeavour to obtain one copy of the police report as evidence for your claims against the relevant insurance company. Ask for written proof that you have filed a police report. This document may be required by your insurer or the local authorities.
An emergency passport is a type of document that allows foreigners to leave or enter another country when their original passport is stolen or expired in another country during their trip. To apply for an Emergency Passport, bring two identical passport-sized photos and as many personal identification documents containing your signature and photo as possible to the Consular Section of the Embassy or Consulate-General.
You should carry copies of a recent passport photo with you in case you need a replacement passport while overseas.
You are required to pay an additional fee to have a lost or stolen passport replaced. In some cases, it may also restrict the length of validity or type of replacement passports.
For the Vietnam Government policy, they will accept an emergency passport for some special cases such as the funeral or family's dissolution. However, foreigners are required to prepare the confirmation or guarantee letter of your family in Vietnam. For other cases, foreigners will be granted a valid visa onto the original/ official passport. An emergency passport will be rejected. The policy will also be changed anytime so to make sure for your case, please contact the travel agent before deciding to visit Vietnam if you hold an emergency passport. We highly recommend you to carefully check all required documents to avoid any hassles at Vietnam airport. A small mistake can lead to big trouble if you are refused to enter.
